CHAPTER ELEVEN

The shuttle bay was considerably smaller than the loading bay, and as much as Daria wanted to explore what had caused the odd change in Specter—and whether the other bots had been affected—they all had a job to do.

Only two shuttles were still connected to the ship, from what she was told, and while the fighting continued more or less in their favor outside the Atalanta, if the boarders reached the bridge, the fight would be over.

Which did beg the question of why pirate ships still attacked them from the outside when they knew they had boarders on the ship. Maybe they didn't care that their crews were on the vessel, which indicated that there was no love lost among the group. Then again, perhaps the larger assault was designed to keep the vessel engaged in a running battle so they would be too distracted to deal effectively with the invaders.

Still, if they captured the vessel from the inside, it would make things considerably easier for the enemy fleet. The shuttle bay had an almost direct path toward the bridge and she would ordinarily have dealt with it first except she’d need to find the damn node and activate the bots. To complicate matters, they were in a pressurized environment, which meant explosives were probably not a good idea. The narrow passages did help to contain their numbers, but it restricted hers as well.

Daria slapped new batteries into her casters and scowled, unhappy that she was forced into a corner and unable to hit anything. She had her armor on and so could possibly avoid being killed by the first few rounds, but the boarders had organized themselves once they realized that they were pinned down.

While she wouldn’t exactly describe the group as competent, they at least showed some indication that someone was directing their movement. Given their numbers, enough fire would come through the hallway to kill her almost immediately if they launched a concerted attack, and it wouldn’t help to send the Hounds in first.

She'd tried already with two of them and they were left smoking with dozens of rounds in their chassis. They could still be repaired, of course, but a hint of guilt still wouldn't go away and nagged at the back of her head. A gentle shift in the gravity indicated that Lombe was still putting the Atalanta through her paces as they traveled through the field.

"You know that you won’t get through here!" Daria shouted, poked her right arm out of cover, and fired down the hallway. It wasn’t blindly since the scanners from the Hounds gave her a decent idea of where the pirates were positioned, but they remained in cover too and without seeing them, she could only tell they were out in the open when they were shooting.

Things were a little more complicated than she liked but she had to fight her way through regardless. They couldn't let the fight continue forever, after all. She wracked her brain to find
